It was from a book and Shim's idea lol maybe he was just kidding there. Every other interview I've ever heard or read Shim said that it was the book and he and his father came up with it.

I'm pretty sure that he was just being sarcastic in the interview with The Dead Hub. I've heard the reasoning he used in that YouTube video more so than I've heard the "dog puking in the garage" story. But that's just my opinion, of course.
