Frantik Interview: Sick Puppies – “The Most Rewarding Aspect Is The Process Of Discovering The Sounds And The Songs”
1 Oct, 2009

By: Gian Erguiza

Three-piece alternative rock outfit, Sick Puppies, are busy supporting their break out record “Tri Polar.” With a hefty number of tour dates lined-up with some of the industry’s best, involvement with Wrestlemania’s 25th Anniversary Special, Samsung Mobile ‘Powering’ their tour and a new single steadily climbing the charts, Sick Puppies are inching further up the pecking order and making their presence known. We caught up the trio and shot off some questions regarding their break out record, a secret deal with their former tour bus driver and what they really thought of social networking.

Hey guys! What’s going on and what’s new with the band?

Well, We’re out on tour supporting our new album “Tri-Polar”

So you guys are headed out on the road for the better part of September and October. How stoked are you guys to be going out on the road, will you guys be adding more dates later and what are some of the pros and cons of going out on tour for you guys?

We plan to be out on the road for the next 2 years supporting this record. The Pro’s are that you get to do something that you know inspires people. The Cons are we don’t see home much anymore.

Tri-Polar, which was released in July, is one hell of a record. For a three-piece, it’s impressive! What were some of the challenges of recording this album and how much of the album was written in studio or out of studio?

It was all written in the studio. We don’t really write on the road. The writing process actually took longer than we expected so our main challenge was recording it in time. We had to rush the whole thing.

What sparked the musical fire in you guys while writing this record and what has been most rewarding aspect about the record so far?

The thing that really gets me going is tinkering in the studio with different sounds with guitars and vocals. The most rewarding aspect is the process of discovering the sounds and the songs.

How did you guys personalize the record and do you guys feel like you’re growing as musicians every step of the way?

We went onto http://www.sickpuppiesworldcrew.net once a week and interacted with our fans as often as we could. We found out where our common ground was and then wrote to accommodate that, so that everyone could enjoy the songs.
“We found out where our common ground was and then wrote to accommodate that, so that everyone could enjoy the songs. I think we grew as musicians about as much as we could after being on tour for 2 years.”

I think we grew as musicians about as much as we could after being on tour for 2 years.

Which song off your latest are you guys most proud of and what’s the significance of the album title “Tri-Polar?”

I think “Odd One” Because it’s so beautiful and it really makes us feel inspired. Plus people really sing that one loud.

WWE? Please explain. Are you guys fans and how did ‘War’ get picked up?

“You’re going down” was picked for the WWE pay per view sessions after we got the add campaign for the STREET FIGHTER 4 game with “War”. They liked what we did and asked if we had anything else that might fit. They liked The new single and that was that!

Heard any good music these days aside for yours? Got any recommends for our readers?

The bands we are on tour with are great. “The Veer Union” And “Adelitas Way”

I’m sure you guys have a ‘Spinal Tap’ moment when everything just goes haywire, every band does at one point in time. Care to share any with our readers?

A good one was when I got left behind and made a deal with the bus driver not to tell anyone so that he would do my laundry for a month. We fired him since then though so I can tell people now!

With the whole social networking phenomenon in full swing, how has social networking helped this band and how do you guys personally feel about social networking in general?

There’s 2 schools of thought on it. One is that it’s great because it means anyone can find anything at any time. Which means more bands have opportunity to get their music out there. The flip side is that because you can get anything anywhere anytime for free, It has devalued music and artists don’t see any of the fruits for their labour. I personally subscribe to both sides. I think people should be able to get whatever they want when they want it. But somehow, the artist should get payed for it.

Sick Puppies loves _______

PLAYING LIVE!

What’s next for Sick Puppies?

We’re going out on tour with Shinedown for a month and a half. We’ve been looking forward to it for a long time.

Anything you want to throw out there, get off your chest, plug or shameless promotion?

We are in a new film called “Rock Prophecies” Check it out at rockprophecies.com. Since our involvement with that film, Samsung Mobile has come on board and they are “Powering” Our tour. Which means more people hear our music. “You’re going down” Just went top 5 last week, so keep calling the stations in your town and requesting it.
