Introducing Rodney Knolton, our Fan of the Week!
When did you first hear about the band?
"I first heard the band on the free hugs video. The video was great...It made me cry...But the music was so stellar! The vocals, the music, the lyrics...It was perfect!!! I became an instant fan!!!"
What is your favorite song?
"Hard to say as one day I'll lean toward one song and on another day I'll lean another way. One song I continually go back to listen to while on YouTube is "my world". The music is kick-ass, I love shim's voice and the lyrics (like most of their songs) are insightful and interesting."
Are you a member of the SPWC forum? If so, why did you decide to join?
"Yes I do believe I am a member of SPWC forum, but have not been active lately. The reason is that I lost my job awhile back and was forced to give up my internet access. I do use the public library as my current internet access and, thank god, have a part time job now and hope to be using my own computer at home again soon. And I joined because I wanted to keep abreast of what was happening with the band. And to see if they had any plans of performing in Memphis again!!!"
Where are you from?
"I'm from Memphis, Tennessee and currently live here. My Facebook info states that I live in Liverpool but I did that for two reasons...One: I'm a great fan on many unsigned bands in Liverpool and two: by putting my hometown as Liverpool I get more feeds added to my page about Liverpool...I already live in Memphis so I don't need that!!!"
Favorite concert memory?
"I've only seen one concert of the sick puppies...It was when they played in Memphis on Beale street at a club called the new daisy. (Nirvana played there once!!!) my memory of the concert really began before the show started....I saw Shim checking on some jeans he had put outside the bus to dry for the show. I yelled his name and we spoke for a few minutes. The show itself was a belter!!! I went in first when the doors opened and went straight down front where the mosh pit was. I stayed there and took tons of photos!!!"
Why do you love them?
"For one I love the intensity of 3 piece bands...I always have ever since the 60s...There's a raw, primal sense about chemistry between 3 band members and it's quite obvious with the sick puppies. I love the songs themselves...The way their sung, performed, produced. I love the timing of the vocals, how shim will "stretch" his words and modulate the volume of his voice while singing. I also appreciate the fact that the band really seems to care about their fan base, especially the young ones with their "it gets better" video. That's so nice!!!"
Fun Facts:
"...I identify with music that most of friends my age don't listen to. I've always loved music and grew up with the Beatles, The Byres, Bob Dylan, etc. But I love all genres. Some of my other favourite bands are foo fighters, queen, and Chevelle to name a few. When I was at the sick puppies concert in Memphis a drunken 20 year old guy told me I was "the king of jurassic park"!!! It was then I learned I looked exactly like sir Richard Attenborough, the actor!!! I'm also told I look like Santa clause ) I guess because sir Richard was Santa in miracle on 34th street!!!"
