Re: math help!
^thanks for helping me like forever ago anyway....
more help anyone please?
Write the equation and solve....
The sum of three times a number and 7 more than the number is the same as the difference between -11 and twice the number. what is the number?
In the 2004-2005 NBA regular season, the Phoenix Suns won two more than three times as many games as they lost, The Suns played 82 games. How many wins and losses did the team have?

Re: math help!
The first one is -3
3x+x+7= -11-2x
4x+7 = -11-2x
+11 +11
4x+18= -2x
-4x -4x
18= -6x
/-6 /-6
-3=x
3x+x+7= -11-2x
4x+7 = -11-2x
+11 +11
4x+18= -2x
-4x -4x
18= -6x
/-6 /-6
-3=x

Re: math help!
I will try to explain it the best I can...
Example 2: 3x + x + 2 = 82
4x = 82-2
4x = 80
x = 20
If you plug it back in to verify: 3(20) + (20) + 2 = 60 + 20 + 2 = 82
Example 2: 3x + x + 2 = 82
4x = 82-2
4x = 80
x = 20
If you plug it back in to verify: 3(20) + (20) + 2 = 60 + 20 + 2 = 82

Re: math help!
right, I didn't finish the problem...
^^ just plug in the number (20) into the equations for the wins and losses... thanks Sarah, I forgot

Re: math help!
I love math! Haven't done it in years.
Took a minute, but it's good to know I still have it.

Re: math help!
3x+x+7= -11-2x
3(2) + 2 + 7 = -11 - 2(2)
6+2+7= -11- 4
15 = -15
Sorry Howard, but doesn't work.
Good try though.
I was worried I messed up.
I haven't done this stuff in years.

The mathematical definition of "difference"...
Eleventh one down.

Re: math help!
They give you a definition of a '-' sign, not the other way around. If a, then b. It doesn't necessarily follow that if b, then a. But the real problem is that it doesn't tell you which number to put first - 2x-(-11) or -11-2x. That's really the crux of our differences, no?

Re: math help!
***Friendly debate continues***
I beg to differ. It does matter what order you write the equation.
-11 -(2x2)= -15
(2x2) -(-11)= 15
What's the difference (non-mathematical definition) between a negative number and a positive?
Well... you can look at it this way...
If you have $5 in your bank account and write a check for $6,
which goes through immediately, you are $1 in the hole.
But if you have $6 in the bank, and write a check for $5,
you still have $1 dollar left.
Make any sense?

Re: math help!
absolutely. i definitely think the order makes a difference. however, the word "difference" doesn't necessarily tell you to subtract the second from the first or the first from the second. that's why we got different answers. i found an example online of the dilemma.

Re: math help!
I see your point. However, that equation was solved assuming all numbers were positive.
In that case, the order of the equations to find the variables is obsolete.
Anyhow, maybe there are 2 answers and we're both right.
pwneress, maybe you can let us know what your answer is when you turn it in?
