I know this interview clip has been posted before, but I tracked down the story. I've never seen a discussion about the story and it's CONNECTion to the song. I asked Shim when I found it if it was the one and he confirmed that it was An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. I was kind of surprised when it turned out to be a story about the American Civil War.

I've read the story about Owl Creek, but it's been a while. I'll have to go read it again. Several years ago, on vacation with my parents, we traveled to all the battle sites along the Chickamauga & Cumberland Trails. My dad was a civil war buff, plus we had ancestors that fought on both sides. (His side of the family has been in Alabama for well over 10 generations.)

Shim's comment about song-writing, that a lot of times you begin with just one sentence & you have no idea where it's going....is so true. I've had the pleasure of watching the process, as well as participating in it, & sometimes the destination of the song is nowhere NEAR where you thought it was going!
