What have we learned?
I have a question to post to everyone.
The first time I remember learning something that made me proud of myself for learning it... I remember vividly.
I had spent a couple of weeks trying to learn how to do fractions.
"Add 3/4's to 2/3rds"
I had been racking my brain, hearing the words and couldn't put it together in my head. I was probably around 8 or something.
I remember a friend of the families using fruit and vegetables to demonstrate to me how it worked and once I got it I spent the rest of the evening looking for more vegetables to do it with. I was Exited that I had finally cracked the code.
What is the first thing you remember learning that was that relevant to you?

Re: What have we learned?
^ Fractions definitely suck.
I remember I was so proud of myself when I learned how to do chemistry problems when I was a sophomore in high school 'cause it took me FOREVER to get it down. Unfortunately, I couldn't even tell you how to do it now, lol.

Re: What have we learned?
Polynomials can bring anyone to their knees in frustration. FOIL does NOT always work, sadly.
I LOVE music, it's my life, whether playing, writing lyrics, or rocking out/dancing. My crutch was that I didn't know how to read music so I would just listen to my favorite songs and then try to play it by ear. That works, but it still felt like a crutch that I couldn't just read the tabs. After plenty of trials and failed attempts, I finally started to get the hang of it. I felt like a genius for a bit there. I'm still not a pro at it, but at least when I read the tabs, I know what I'm looking at now.

Aww Shimon I love your insightfulness I would have to agree with the others that fractions are definitely not one of my strong points especially when trying to follow a recipe for cooking or baking.
"What is the first thing you remember learning that was that relevant to you?"
-To answer your question there I'd probably have to say bookkeeping/accounting/Quickbooks accounting program. I took an accounting class in college and just could never get the hang of it as hard as I tried. Then in December of 2004 my mother and I bought a business and couldn't afford to have an accountant do all the work (especially @$100 per hour!) So I'd have to go to the accountant about a 1/2 dozen times a year, and phone calls, and e-mails for this or that but now over the years I've come to the point where I can now do just about everything myself. Makes me feel good to not have to rely on someone to do it for me. You know? Its amazing to see how far we've come in about 5 yrs time and to not only the act of doing the accounting, but understanding the WHY we have to do it part.
What brought this thought up?

You think it's all just playing, fun and games
You're treating it like a joke
Some people say they wanna be me
This life can be very deceiving
It's just your state of mind

Re: What have we learned?
I can't remember the first thing I learned. But the most prominent for me was learning to play disc golf. When I first tried I could only throw the disc about ten feet in front of me. I would occasionally get intimidated by my dad who at the time could throw it at least 250 feet. Now it's more like 1 1/2 football fields. But I kept coming out whenever I could and I still need work but now I can throw it at least 230 feet. But this sport is one where you are constantly learning things everytime you play it. So I have never really stopped learning, but I enjoy it very much.

Re: What have we learned?
I would say English since i came to the United States not knowing a single word. Pretty uncomfortable sitting in first grade class not understanding anything going on around you. However, since I can't really place the moment it clicked, I'll skip that.
I do remember exactly when I learned to spell "inseparable". I thought I was some hot sh*t at our regional spelling bee. Figured nationals was next. NOT! Inseparable, not inseperable.

Great question, really makes you think!
For me, I think it was learning to do a back handspring. I was about 10 and I had taken "tumbling" gymnastics for a couple years and just couldn't get a back handspring. I won the "Miss Gymnastics" title which meant I really needed to get it before our show, and I remember working so hard and doing it over and over on the trampoline and one of the older girls would come over to my house and spot me. I finally got it, and then went on to spend the next 11 years as a competitive gymnast.

For me I think it was when I learned how to skate. I was 10 years old and I wanted to join hockey because a lot of my friends were in it. I had to learn how to skate in hockey skates which was a lot different than skating in figure skates. I almost wanted to quit because I couldn't stay on my feet for longer than 5 seconds. But then a year later it all paid off when I got my first goal! Even though we got our butts kicked that was one of most memorable moments of my childhood.

Re: What have we learned?
For me, Learning how to catch a ball
I love baseball. So, in 9th grade, I tried out for my softball team and the first practice, we were playing catch and we were using baseball gloves and he told us to "catch with our left and throw with our right" and I told him I didn't know how to do it and all he said was I got to practice. He let us take home mitts and balls home, so I took both and practice outside my house.
One day, we were going to play outside, and I was a outfielder and this girl named Chris hits one my way, so I'm running back thinking "I GOT IT! I GOT IT!" and I threw my left hand in the air and bam! RIGHT IN MY GLOVE! And everybody started cheering. I felt like a rockstar

Re: What have we learned?
Shim, I think everyone had trouble with fractions!!
I remember when I was 5 years old in kindergarten, I knew how to spell my "at school name", Amanda, and my "at home name", Mandi. I wanted to learn how to spell my last name. I thought it was so difficult. I didn't know how I would ever remember it! I stared at my name plate on my desk all day in hopes to learn it.
My Dad came to pick me up that day and on the way home I told him even thought my teacher wasn't showing us how to spell our last names, I had learned it all by myself. After we pulled onto driveway and before we went inside he asked me to spell it for him.
*gulp*
I was so nervous I'd get it wrong!! "...S-H-O....umm...R....T?!?" My dad was so proud of me!! I can remember him smiling and patting me on my leg and told me he was proud of me and to keep practicing it so I could tell Mom when she was home from work...I don't remember Mom being as impressed, but she also worked the graveyard shift as an ER nurse at the hospital, so I don't blame her for not being super enthusiastic the next morning!!
And the interesting part about this story....it was a preview into the type of person I am...a total nerd, wanting to learn anything and everything--even if the teacher wasn't on that subject yet, AND I have a photgraphic memory.
If only spelling Short was the hardest obstacle in life these days...
XOXO

Re: What have we learned?
Mine really isn't something I learned as in a school subject or any thing. It was this year actually when I participated in a 5K run. I was so proud of myself that I told myself I was going to run the whole thing no matter what it took because I was doing it in support of 2 loved one I lost this year to Cancer. I did it and I came in 111 out of over 300 people. It was a proud moment in my life and one that inspired me to keep running.

Re: What have we learned?
For me the lesson learned happened about a year and a half ago.
After really messing up in college, I decided to go home and work. Well that turned into staying home and working for about 3 years. After meeting a friend that has since changed my life, he helped me to decide it was time to get out of the rut that was my life at the time. After attempting to go back to school and them not taking me (wanted me to jump through alot of hoops, which included going and getting a 2 year degree) I decided to join the military. Well then, I found out that I didn't make the weight requirements for the Navy at the time. I'm 5'11" and the military wants you at 195 lbs. I was 250. After working on it and dealing with ALOT of setbacks, I am now 220 and make their body fat percentage requirement. I am now a Navy Sailor and am continuing to lose weight.
What I learned is never give up on something you want, no matter how many times you get pushed back. The day I got into the Navy, I cried. I cried out of happiness. I got what it is I wanted in life and could not be happier.
Thank you for being interested in what we learned.

i have three things!
1. learning to spell 'because' in grade one. this happened when someone in my class said something like 'i cant believe u dont even know how to spell because!' and so i just kept repeating b-e-c-a-u-s-e to myself. over and over and over
2. pythagoras theorem. did this last year, and got full marks on my test for it. yippee
3. learning to make a straw star. this happened yesterday, and i was so proud of myself!

Re: What have we learned?
I dont remember the first thing I learned but the most important thing I ever learned is what love feels like, and what heartbreak feels like. Falling in love for the first time was one of the most exciting things I have ever experienced and after that all the love songs and movies finally made sense to me, and then when she dumped me for another guy and broke my heart all the songs about heart break and pain finally made sense to me. Not only that but when I was in love with this girl (and in reality I still am because I will always love her) I was able to write poetry and songs which I couldn't do before, and now that its over I can still write about good and bad things that happened. In my opinion that was the best thing I have ever learned cause it help me grow as a person.
