Haha the fractions thing doesn't work very well for me either, Shim.

But the big lesson that I've learned is that even though something may feel like the end of the world, it's really not. And time is the best way to heal that, in my opinion. This past year I had to deal with my parents divorce and a heartbreak on top of that. So I could say I wasn't the happiest person. But what helped me is taking it one day at a time, and eventually things got better. They still are. I've become a stronger person, and I'm MUCH happier now.

"I hate fractions, yes I do....when I was little I had a hard time tyin' my shoe"....lol lame I know..I'm sick, I'm tired, and in one of those punchy moods. Still couldn't resist posting.

Going into the eighth grade, I finally decided to stop letting people walk all over me and/or push me around. It's still - to this day - the most memorable school year of my life. It is such an amazing feeling to finally let go of all the worries about not fitting in and caring about what others think. Even recalling it now makes me feel a bit lighter.

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Shim. :)

And to everyone that is still boggled by fractions...I'm so with you there!

I taught myself how to drive a standard car! I bought it with no clue on how to drive it, and HAD to teach myself! I know, not very complicated, but I felt so good after I mastered rolling stops!

Hi Shim and everyone : ) ,

Great post Shim. One thing about me, is that I love to learn. Mostly, what I love to learn about is anything that has to do with life. There were times in my life that I had to learn to find out more about myself. At one time, I was unhappy with myself as a person. It was a journey for me, to find myself. So I can learn to love myself, others, and to appreciate life for what it was. It took me a couple of years to where I was able to find out my true self, to where I am happy, less stressed, and have the ability to truly love myself, as a person. Now I am there. Now that I am, I would love to share, and teach others. I had a hard time fitting in with people. I had a hard time getting along with some friends. I lost a lot of friends because I was different than they were, and it bothered me alot and it caused me to have a hatred for myself. I felt like I was this awful person. Now that I have learned all of these things I needed to learn to be a better person, and to be happy within my own skin, to truly love who I am, I am in the process of writing about it. So others can be inspired and learn how to be truly happy, and love themselves from within as well.

We all have the priviledges to learn things in our lifetimes. Things that we are really proud of. I am proud that I went through this journey of finding myself, and true happiness. I hope that others out there have that experience as well.

Fractions were always hard for me. I hated math. Never really got the jist of it and suffered with it a lot during school. So I commend you for giving it a shot, and for being successful with it. They can be hard to figure out. But you are doing it, and you should be really proud of your accomplishments with it.

TC,

J

Relevance changes as life progresses.

I guess the ultimate thing was that if I procrastinate - I just get screwed later. Better off doing things now (good or bad) than either having to do them later or potentially missing out on something a bit too late.

Secondly - I don't have to be the first one to get to the party and the last one to leave.

Third - when the unexpected happens that is completely foreign to you - embrace it and learn from it. For me it was learning more about genetic make-up and how stop codons and exon deletions can change a viewpoint forever.

As you can see the first age 6, the second age 15 through 23 (that one took a while to learn), and age 30 for the last.

Work hard - play harder!

One thing I was thrilled to finally learn how to do was back when I first started playing guitar, I was 20. It was so frustrating learning how to 'snap' from one open chord to another without having to think.....okay....this finger goes here and that finger goes there and be sure not to mute that string and be sure to mute the E. It took a long time but now I'm playing in a band and it has become my biggest hobby. :music:

I definitely remember learning to rely on and accept myself. My parents split up when I was 10 and things were kinda rough for awhile. I can remember realizing one day that just because my parents are jerks doesn't mean I have to be. From then on I've always felt pretty comfortable with myself. Of course I have my moments of self-doubt just like everyone else, but I'm really proud that I learned early to accept myself for who I am.

i learned to find a way to vent instead of holding it on in until i can't take it anymore. if i grab my ipod & go in my room for a little while i can think about things more clearly instead of making stupid mistakes.

^^^ haha, nice

I've learned that...wearing gloves while using a rasp to shape a guitar or guitar neck is crucial. I mean, they really save your hands.
Also, smiling sincerely at everybody makes it hard for anyone to dislike you. In fact, it makes some people want to talk to you.
And lastly, that it's not worth it to be normal. I get the biggest sense of accomplishment from finding something artsy and wierd, and spreading the word about it, or encouraging people to do something similar.

I tell the earth, "thanks for the hair, thanks for the skin, thanks for the bone",
Though I now slowly give it back I still appreciate the loan.

I'm always really happy when I come out on the other side of a crappy situation. Things like that usually remind me that I am capable of surviving anything. I guess that isn't really the first thing that I've learned, but it's the most memorable.

My mother tends to get sick a lot and I have to leave college in order to go home and take care of my younger sister. Even after leaving school, taking her to school, visiting my mother in the hospital, buying groceries (basically being a mom) I manage to have above a 3.0GPA... and be somewhat sane.

I guess that would make "I am always stronger than I anticipate I will be" the true thing I learn.

Love.

I learned Humility. I have had to humble myself for people to learn a lesson or go through a difficult time in my self. Shim you know Shelby "Rika" probably better than anyone, I have humbled myself more times over dealing with issues than I can count. Being a parent is the hardest job you could ever have. BUT in saying that it has been the MOST REWARDING experience of my life. There is NOT one thing I would change or do over. She is my other half.

I think learning how to navigate this forum is going to be on my list...I'm tech challenged.

One thing that comes to mind is when I learned how to do the gene chart in bio class. I always hated bio, and when I needed to take it in college I wasn't excited. I ended up with a really cool professor, and she was extremely energetic about the subject (which helps make a class interesting, even if you don't like the subject matter). She taught it in a way that was interesting and I actually understood it. There's no way I can remember it now, but when it happened I was sooooo happy and stoked about it.

I've learned a lot both personally and professionally, especially in the last 10 years or so.....so there's a long list that I babble off-hand to the students who work for me....poor kids. Haha! ;)

By the way...I think I'm in love with this icon --->

I have learned to just be myself, not care what people think of what I am or what I do, and just live my life to the fullest. Humility definitely plays into that, as does trust, confidence, and faith in myself.

Over the past year or so, I've learned not to let people walk all over me and take advantage of me. I still slip up and get myself hurt, but I'm getting better at it.

I've also learned that things are never as easy as they may seem. You have to fight tooth and nail for what you really want. And if it is something you really really truly want, nothing will stop you from getting it.

Kudos to you Hollie!

You're right, and you shouldn't be anyone but who you are. That's something I learned a few years ago, and just recently had reinforced. I've also learned it makes you happier overall when you do, and living in today with the people you care about (those people who care about you for exactly who you are with no conditions surrounding it) is really what makes life happy.

Anywho, I thought I'd give you a kudos for the statement!
